Scope Request
Legal and contact

Who you are buying from

Scope Request is made and sold by Havenswift Hosting Ltd, a hosting company in England that has been running other people's servers since 2009. The board exists because we wanted one for our own products and did not want to pay by the voter for it.

The licence

What a licence is and is not

A plain summary, not the agreement itself. The full terms go out with the key, and where this page and that document disagree, the document is the one that counts.

What you get

  • The right to run one installation of Scope Request, at the hostname or hostnames the licence names, for the year it covers.
  • Every update released during that year, applied from the admin screens.
  • Support for that year on the paid licences. The free licence comes with the documentation.
  • Your data, in your database, exportable to CSV at any time without asking anybody.

What it does not cover

  • Reselling or redistributing the software, or running it as a service for people who are not your own customers, unless the licence says so.
  • Hosting. It is your server, your backups and your uptime. We have no access to your install and cannot restore it for you.
  • An availability commitment from us. There is nothing of ours in the path between your visitors and your board.
  • Removing the licence check. It lives in the protected core, and an install whose licence has lapsed keeps every byte of data.
Privacy

Three separate things, and it matters which

People conflate the website, the licence check and the board itself. They hold different data, in different places, and only one of them is ours.

This website

Static files. No analytics, no third-party fonts, no scripts, no forms and no cookies set by us. Our web server keeps ordinary access logs, which include your IP address, for a short period for security and troubleshooting.

The licence check

Once a day your install posts four fields to our licence server: the licence key, the hostname, the install path and the version number. We keep them to answer whether the licence is valid and to see which versions are in the field. Nothing a member of your board writes is in that request.

Your board

On your install, you are the data controller and we are not a processor, because no member record, email address, post, comment or vote ever reaches us. We ship the privacy controls, the retention settings and a notice template; what you do with them is yours.

What this means in practice. There is no data processing agreement to sign with us for the board's content, because there is no processing for us to do and no sub-processor of ours for anyone to audit. If your own compliance process needs that written down rather than inferred, the licence terms say it in as many words.

Our own board is not an exception. feedback.scoperequest.com runs on Scope Request, on a server of ours. Post there and you are a member of a board governed by exactly the controls described on this page, which is the shortest way we know of to show that we use what we sell.

Still a question

Email us. If the answer would be useful to somebody else, it ends up in the documentation.
